My post was an advertisement for the 2021 NBA All Star game in Atlanta. I made it because I wanted people to know how and when to watch it. Also my poster implied that the events would all be held in one day, unlike previous years when they took place over the course of the whole weekend. My target audience was NBA fans or any casual sports fan interested in watching basketball's biggest stars play together on the same court. I enjoyed working on the design because I was forced to think more creatively than most projects I work on in other classes and the feedback I received was constructive and helpful in the revision process.
I enjoyed working on the poster with the design principles we learned in class in mind as in my Creative Genius FYE freshman year we did similar projects, but without learning about and keeping these principles in mind. Learning about the ways in which you can make your visual more aesthetically pleasing made it harder to wonder if people would think the poster looked bad once it was finished.
To make the visual appealing to the eye I tried to focus on making the design have a natural layout and eye flow. I put the coverage details on the right and on the left side I put the logo with the bottom having pictures of the players from the Eastern Conference that will play in the game. I felt this was most natural because English speakers read from left to right, so I felt it was important to have the call to action be in the top left corner. I chose to include pictures from players from just one Conference because I decided it would be too clustered to have all ten starters in a poster and it makes sense to have separate posters for each conference. To further enhance the design of the poster I tried to not have the background have too many colors, so I just used the NBA's colors which are red and blue. I used white font to contrast the blue background and because white is also in the NBA's logo along with the red and blue. In choosing a font I decided to go with Impact font because it was the widest and most eye catching font.
The semiotics I included in my poster were the 2021 All-Star logo, the TNT logo, and the players. From the 2021 All-Star logo readers of my poster can infer that it refers to the 2021 game held in Atlanta because the NBA released the logo at the end of December and it has been included in advertisements in the days since. The TNT logo is another semiotic I included because I felt putting the logo would create a more professional quality to the poster than typing TNT with the Impact font. For the players I only included their picture because I assumed the audience for this poster would know the players from their pictures alone since these are five of the top ten best and most popular basketball players in the world. Even if some people could not recognize one or two of the players if they were interested enough to watch the game they would quickly learn the players names from the broadcast.
For the most part I felt I did well in creating a poster with natural eye flow and overall good design, however, there are some things I still think I could have improved on. I think I could have made the call to action look a little better. I wish photoshop had the same font that TNT uses in their advertisement, but Impact was the font that looked the most similar. I also couldn't figure out how to make the All Star logo a smaller size and I think it's a little too large for my liking. Even though there are improvements I could have made if I were more familiar with photoshop learning about some general design principles is still beneficial and I will never create something that I am completely happy with.
