Trinity Invitational Poster: Behind the Image

The event I chose to create a poster/advertisement for is the Trinity Invitational Track & Field meet that is coming up this weekend. My core creative concept revolved around the essence of a collegiate Track & Field which is filled with competition and pride.

My main focal point, text, and call to action focus around these two aspects by building a sense of Trinity pride and also invoking feelings of competitiveness and readiness for something serious.

My target audience is the Trinity population from students to faculty to staff. Anyone who has Trinity pride and loves a good competition should be interested in an event like this and the core creative concept attempts to pull on these qualities.

For my focal point, I decided to pick the image of my teammate Bailey where she is standing in a power stance with her pole ready in her hand. Her demeanor is serious and exudes a sense of power. This image helps build the sense that this event is a competition, and the uniform and pole in her hand should make it clear that this is a Track & Field event.

To follow the advice of Golombisky and Hagen, I made sure that this was my one focal point. I also positioned her upper body at the top third of the page so that the eyes fall easily at that focal point. It is also advised to create a good eye-flow through the poster and its information, and because the image has the pole that points down through the poster, I placed all the text information below the focal point where the pole is pointing.

The color scheme and balance of contrast were also considered in the poster. The image I chose has lots of light tones, so to balance this brightness, I added a shade of black at the bottom of the poster. In consequence, I made the text for the information a white color to make it easily readable. Another color choice I made was to color the "Trinity Invitational" banner maroon. This was an easy choice as it fits the color of my teammate's uniform and creates a cohesive design. The maroon is also symbolic of Trinity as that is part of our school's color scheme. The white border also parallels the Trinity logo on her uniform.

Similarly, my decision to choose the Roboto Slab font for the banner text was based on Trinity's typical font for their own logos. It is easily identifiable and makes it easier to perceive the event as Trinity-focused, especially with the all caps. I contrast this with the san serif Roboto font for the details of the event. This creates more emphasis on the banner text which should be the first thing that is read. The size of the font below the banner is also smaller to add to the emphasis on "Trinity Invitational."

One main focus of applied semiotics in this poster is my teammate. Denotatively, she is holding a colorful pole with a tank top and tights, However, someone who is more familiar with the Track & Field scene and athletics, in general, will be able to perceive her appearance as symbolic of a pole vaulting athlete with her uniform and implement. Another signifier that I employ is her demeanor that I discussed earlier. Her stern look and the hand on her hip with the stable stance signify a sense of competitiveness and readiness.
