San Antonio Burger Week is an opportunity for community members to enjoy a burger while supporting a local non profit, the San Antonio Food Bank.
While looking for more information about the event, I noticed that none of the promotional materials (i.e. posters) featured symbols that represented San Antonio. In creating my poster, I wanted to ensure that viewers immediately understood that this was an event meant for San Antonians.
By combining the Tower of the Americas with a burger, my hope was that the audience would automatically pick up on the idea that this was a San Antonio-based, burger-themed event.
The website, which features a "passport," encourages patrons to revisit an old favorite or try out a burger at a new restaurant. As I created the poster, I knew that I wanted the audience to have a quick and easy way to find the list of participating restaurants. I included the QR code with a link to the passport so viewers would have automatic access to this information.
When I began working on the poster, I was unsure of how effective I would be at producing a poster which followed all of the design principles while also keeping it informative. As a media consumer, you don't process what the focal point of a poster is, or whether or not the movement works well. You simply look at the piece and see it as an effect of the producer's efforts.
As the media content producer for this assignment, I had to be intentional about the focal point: the burger and Tower of the Americas. I paid special attention to the colors, so that the important information would stand out, without being consumed by the background.
While I think some of the design choices I made were effective, I am still unhappy with the "SATX" in the top left corner. I had originally made the element far too large, taking away from the intended focal point of the design. Now that it is smaller, I worry that it is surrounded by too much negative space. I definitely think the placement and/or design of this element could have been better in order to create a more cohesive work.
I was most surprised and frustrated by the amount of effort it required for me to find an adequate layout for the text so that it balanced with the main focal point. I still believe that this could have been done more effectively, and in a way that created better movement and eye flow.
In conclusion, while there are elements of the design that could have been improved upon, I am proud of the end result. I believe that I put in my best effort to follow design principles and create a work that represents a consistent theme. I hope that viewers walk away from this poster wanting to find a new, delicious burger to try in San Antonio!
